In this week’s class, we had the opportunity of having a guest speaker named Jesse, where he talked to us about technology. From a young age, my mom always talked about social media and how my sisters and I need to be careful since nothing is deleted. As a young child, that has always stuck with me, and I have always been careful. I feel uneasy when I learn something new about social media and technology. It is so common to hear all the bad things about social media. Although he highlighted the negative aspects, he also talked about how we can implement fun lessons in the classroom that we might not have had the opportunity to do when we were kids. What also stuck with me was when he mentioned iCloud and how its server is not in Canada. When I was working as an ECEA we used to take photos all the time on an iPad. How they were automatically downloaded onto iCloud, it never occurred to us that we should watch out for that! It was interesting how he brought attention to phones and how kids are not necessarily addicted to their screens but more afraid of missing out. That students may be on their phones throughout a lesson and how teachers can make it so they have scheduled screen times that won’t interrupt lessons. Jesse’s presentation was very insightful and I love to hear all about technology and policies because it’s something I don’t necessarily look into myself even though I should.
